Lester Holt only seems not to be African-American, because, while being brown, he doesn't displease non-African-American people by remembering anything sad that happened to brown people in America. He goes with the pro-white flow and has a white wife. He is television's ideal African-American: one with no memory.

Lester Holt is of Jamaican Heritage, which is why he doesn't have the racial hang ups YOU want him to have.

At some point, someone will have to take the bold move to stop SAYING "Get past racism" and actually DO it. I'm not special, not a brilliant person, not a once-in-a-generation mind -- and if *I* can figure that out, what does it say about society at large for not acknowledging the elephant in the middle of the room?

Lester's mother is Jamaican and his dad was white, I believe Scotish.

He is half white half black, so I don't understand why some of the readers want him to chose a side.

Get over it people, that is how racism spreads.

In response to "Lester Holt is of Jamaican Heritage, which is why he doesn't have the racial hang ups YOU want him to have." I , the person who made the comment you respond to, am also of Jamaican heritage.

Though intelligent reflection is the only thing not allowed in "free" America, I will note that Lester Holt is being embraced with semi-open arms by television because, again, he descends from a plantation-owning triple-great grandfather. Thus he is a perfect brown-colored muzzle to silence the legitimate grievances of the very different brown people who lived through the American black experience.

Bill, "Can't lester just be a talented man and not be a muzzled lap dog? seems pretty rude to suggest he has to be one type of black man to be worthy of our praise"

Lester is talented, brown and attractive.

And yet, it seems pretty rude, obscene & cruel to me to systematically reject and suppress Black people with memories in favor of Black people chosen because of how effectively they can serve as cocoa-colored tombs for those memories.

Oh quit your belly aching. Black people CAN be truly racist. HERE is why... you claim to not be able to treat someone so horribly as you have been treated, yet... you have no idea what bad treatment is. Quit disgracing those who were slaves, who truly were mistreated. You don't know jack! It didn't happen to you so GET OVER IT! I don't blame the descendants of the black man on death row who kills and rapes. It is not their fault. The U.S. is the only country that babies you. Try visiting the U.K. They treat blacks equally because they don't walk around trying to make people pity them. If you want people to see you as an equal.....open a book, keep your nose clean and for crying out loud... stop feeling so sorry for yourself. You are like the drama queen chick on all the reality t.v. shows- nobody likes you because you create drama and complain about everything!!! Stop being a sissy and stop pointing out your children's differences to them and they won't feel inferior to everyone. Blacks do a fabulous job of making each other feel unworthy by reminding each other how helpless you are. Many real Africans, who live in rural areas have had a far worse life than your ancestors did, let alone you do, and yet they don't paint a bad picture of blacks because they don't whine about what they don't have... they work hard for it!!!!! Learn from them!!

Oh my God! We're really hot tonight. First of all, attempting to get a white person to acknowledge and/or identify with the pain Black have suffered is like attempting to get an sexually abusing father to admit his rape of his daughter was injurious to her. Denial suits people who can't simply say, "Hey it was wrong and the fallout still affects some today." The look for ways to avoid and dismiss the abuse to circumvent their own guilt. A rightly deserved guilt because they directly benefit from their ancester's reap of wealth from slavery just as we have been cursed by it. Imagine owning a company and paying $0 wages for labor? That can build wealth in families for many, many, many generations. Nuff said. Lester Holt does not seem to identify with whatever African heritage he has. He clearly has an African geneotype and I doubt if he got it from his mother. I guess that's okay. I am particularly proud of my African ancestry and everything about them. I had some ancestors that owned plantations and slaves too. But you won't hear me bragging about it. Its difficult to reconcile. Most African slave women were raped. My mother was of Creole ancestry from New Orleans, Louisiana. Those Creoles did some terrible and hurtful things to the Africans in their mist, even though those same Africans were their family, i.e., mothers, brothers, sisters, etc. Holt is not really one of us. We are African American and our ancesters participated in the 60s movement that made it possible for brown skinned Lester Holts to represent African Americans in jobs like NBC. When I worked at NBC in the 70's, they were non too happy to hire blacks. There is nothing wrong with being versed in history, understanding you heritage (all of it), and being okay with who you are. But we as Africans (in diaspera), know far too well what it is like to be to be black. I am not confused. I think it is hilarious when whites attempt to judge and comment on what has "not" happened to us, but to our ancestors. Two years ago, I was traveling through Highland Park, IL and was pulled over by 8 police who pointed their weapons at my head and called me every kind of "Nig..." you could think of. I was pulled out of my car, made to stand barefoot on the cold ground because some white man had seen a black man run through his yard. Now I'm a woman, but -- okay. There I stood, with guns pointed at my head, being cursed at, and thrown around until the white man drove by in a police car and acknowledge that I wasn't the man who ran through his yard. I asked the white officer, would your white mother be treated this way? He turned and walked away. It is a prevailing attitude that people of darker skin simply do not have the same value. The summary of such logic is that I these people can and will be treated as those who are not valued. Now, that is a Black American experience. It was not concluded with slavery. And it is steeped in a belief that "one" people are superior (in looks, in worth, in religion, in value to society, in reason for living) to another and on that basis, they deserve more of the everything of value. Uhmmmm.... We have vehemently fought against the idea. Blacks can be and often are "prejudice", but racist carries a different assumption. Racism is associated with power, real power. And, sorry whites who don't believe that the ills of racism no longer exists, at less than 10% of the total population, it's not us. We don't believe that we are economically, socially, spiritually, intellectually superior to you. And, we don't use such a believe to underscore our position of power in this world. Back to Lester Holt. He is not of that culture. His mother comes from a world where slaves and slave owners happily skip off into the sunset and don't seek to reconcile the ills of their collective past. I don't blame most of you who don't want to hear this. Its painful to broch. It makes people uncomfortable. Most, like Lester Holt just don't talk about their black fathers. He has melted into the white race, those Scottish, East Indians, and everything else that isn't African. Well, not for me. I am African. I am of African ancestry. And, my African ancestors have been professors, Pulitzer Prize winners, scientist, great artist, politicians holding high office and more. My ancestors marched in the 60s for equality for all people. Not because of the amount of white blood in them. Because they were driven and determine to overcome the circumstances that incumbered them. I come from a much different culture than a Lester Holt. I don't recognize him as an man of African American culture. He's not one of us.

FYI to a prior post, Hispanics are considered caucasions. Most of these comments are sad if not hateful. I agree that African Americans have had to overcome A LOT of obstacles and in my opinion, having done so, most of them are quite adept at doing so and believe (as they should) that they can in fact (i.e., yes we can, yes we will) overcome whatever challenges that present themselves along the road of life. Whether Lester Holt is Jamaican, African-American, PuertoRican or Italian is not so important as the content and the quality of his character, which is quite evident. I look forward to the day when everyone in this world can look at another person and see into their heart and soul without looking at the color of his/her skin. After all, did you get to pick what color skin you were going to be born with?

America Loves You When You First Love It!

I'm amused by two writers here, the person stating "You Friggin N** are never happy" and the black woman who has written three novels on this blog crying about blacks being mistreated and being victims.

The way I see it, these two narrow minded people are the same. Scared shrinking, insecure little people. The rest of us just keep doing what we have to do in life with no belly aching.

As an American who happens to be a black man, I am sick and tired of ALL crying babies especially the ones of my race who claim to speak for us all when it comes to past treatment. Sure, I'll be called an Uncle Tom for not being angry at the white man. But for God's sake when do you get past feeling like a victim? You're searching for the Enemy when your problem is the "Inner Me." Besides, you would search far and wide before you found any American today whose ancestors were not victimized by another culture. Get over yourself!

I come from humble beginnings and have never been to college. Yet, I have worked my tail off to become today a well dressed man who has mastered the English language, as well as Spanish, German and Portugues, and who owns successful businesses. And you know something, I rarely run into a situation of disrespect. On the rare occaision that I do, it's usually from an angry black person. The young pants sagging mumbling thug or the self righteous "Afro-Centric, I've Never Spent A Day in Africa" type who is angry at their own failures in life but chooses to reflect their insecurity on me because, man, I'm happy. Like the woman ranting and raving about being a victim of history.

It is "you" my sister who weakens the race with all your crying and complaining because YOU can't compete. You make yourself and your race strong by competing and succeeding. Take a page out of Lester Holt's book. When I look him I don't see race, I see an elegant, intelligent, competent MAN!

And I remind you, I am Black, I live in a predominant black Wash DC neighborhood, married to a beautiful dark skinned black woman, have black kids who feel they can do anything. I have pride for my heritage. My grandgather was a W. VA cool miner who educated himself pulling himself up, as did my father moved the family further and now I have done my part to leapfrog our family further. We see ourselves as Americans! Not victims.

American loves you when you FIRST love it!!!

However I can't stand anything about George W. Bush. Isn't the real issue who bother's you? I,ve met some really screwey people in every color. just a few words. Until black Americans start to accept their race they will always have issues. Lester Holt is of mixed ancestry his mother's father last names is DeRozario which most likely means he is of Spanish or Portuguese Jews that fled to Jamaica. His mother's father appears to be white. His grandmother is a mixed woman who's seem to got her mixture through the marriage of her parents. This is America and you can call yourself whatever you wish but the fact is he is a mixture of both black and white and that makes him mixed. He is not African, he is part African. To call one's self African when one is also has a strong white ancestry is to deny part of who you are. It seems to me black Americans are always looking to find the "black" in some one. They don't realize by doing this they are really saying if I am going to be black so are you no matter how pale you are and in doing so they are giving a negative connotation to being black. If Lester choose to call himself white most black Africans would be upset. Why, is being white something so wonderful that you black Americans feel if I can't be well he is not going to be?. Think about it. Dig real deep. Correct this issue in yourselves and race relations will be greatly improved. Yes there will always be bigots , in every race.

In this country if you have any African ancestry you are considered black or African American even if you have other ethnic origins. So why the fuss over what ethnicity Mr. Hold is? Please stop the madness. Racism is still a prevalent in America. Look at all the racist comments towards our President who is an honorable intelligent man born of an (African father, caucasion mom). I can write a book here too about the pain of being reminded by others that my ancestors were slaves or comments made to me that "I'm different" from other black people. That's insulting! Why? because I am intelligent, work hard, respect myself others, etc. I AM STILL A BLACK PERSON. A person should not have to conform to the majority to be respected. Thanks to the more open minded younger generation who dont look at color and judge. As Rodney King said "can't we all just get along?"

What does it matter what race Lester Holt is, because he knows where he came from and he knows he's an very intelligent black man, who has set goals in life and has accomplished them all. Complaining about slavery and how white people treated our ancesters will not get us far to accomplish our dreams in life. It happened and it was crule, but black people weren't the only people mistreated real badly back than either, there were many people that were mistreated but they did not let the torture of their own people ruin their whole lives either. Lester is a proud black man who has made it very far in life. He did not let any excuse hold him back in life. He did not let the oppression of slavery keep him back and use it as an excuse to commit crimes, like selling drugs and possession of them, or arm robbery or murder. He did the right thing by going to college. His dream were to become a reporter and an anchorman for the today show and NBC nightly news and dateline, my favorite show might I add. He is a handsome man and one heck of a guitar playist if I say so myself

I have always been interested in the term "African-American" that signifies in the US, blacks who live in America. I know several Africans, with whom I played Rugby, and none were black. Also, much of North Africa is inhabited by Arabs, who are Semites.

Another question: why do Black Americans tend to have an accent, yet in the UK you could not tell a black Englishman from white by his speech?
